Yours Truly and Commemoration of WWII Darwin Bombing

Phil Murray’s song ‘Yours Truly (That April Day)’ has been included in the audio book ‘Red Spots over Darwin’ – produced as part of the commemoration on 19 February 2012 of the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin in World War II.

Author, Simmone Croft, produced the audio book in honour of her grandfather, Henry Scott, who, as a PMG linesman, observed the first bombing raid from the top of a telegraph pole. Sadly, he later discovered that three of his family had been killed when the Post Office was bombed.

Simmone said she selected ‘Yours Truly (That April Day)’ because “the words…are beautifully written and very powerful” and reminiscent of what her grandfather felt during the bombing, especially the lines: “Now unless you’ve heard the scream of shell or the roar as bombs explode…or felt the clutch of icy fear…”.

Simmone added: “I have comments from people who have listened to my audio book and they said the song was really heartfelt with words that stuck in their minds. One lady said that the Last Post on the end of the song sent shivers up her spine”.

Phil explained that ‘Yours Truly (That April Day)’ was written in memory of his Dad, a proud veteran of WWII. “The words of the chorus are my Dad’s actual words. He would have been very proud to have been associated in this way with the commemoration of the bombing of Darwin”.

My Valentine to the Women of the World….and Special Offer

Below is a St Valentine’s Day message from Phil Murray.

“My song ‘She Gave Me Love’ is my Valentine to you, the women of the world!

This song and its underlying message had humble beginnings.

On visiting Scotland, my wife and I were welcomed very warmly by my Scottish family, especially my cousins, Mary and Elizabeth, whose loving hospitality knew no bounds.

After returning to Australia, this got me thinking about the love women have showered on me throughout my life – my mother, my grandmother and aunties, my sisters, my wife, my daughter; but also many friends, acquaintances and workmates.

This love, so freely given, speaks to me of women’s immense capacity to love – not only romantically, as wonderful as that is. In so many ways, you grace us with your care.

In the 1970s, Helen Reddy’s ‘I Am Woman’ became an iconic anthem for the cause of gender equality. Four decades on, that song’s rousing assertions have been thoroughly tested. Despite the sacrifices, challenges remain, but look how much you’ve gained!

What amazes me is that, despite the upheaval in your own lives, you remain so caring of others. Even in the workforce, you dominate most caring occupations – nursing, other health professions, teaching, child care, aged care and social work – to name a few!

Whether your selfless love is natural or learned, where would the world be without it – without you – each and every one of you?

‘She Gave Me Love’ tells a story drawn from the experiences of some women I know who confronted the ‘glass ceiling’ of gender inequality. It is not representative of all women – it is not meant to be – but it does highlight the caring love that women are renowned for the world over.

‘She Gave Me Love’ is my way of acknowledging the sacrifices you have made, admiring your achievements and thanking you for the love you inject into my life and the lives of everyone, every day.

To the women of the world – thank you and happy St Valentine’s Day on 14 February!”

In addition, AMRAP’s AirIt service which permits downloads to all community radio stations, has accepted three of the album’s tracks (the maximum allowed): You’re My Reason, She Gave Me Love; and Someone Out There. Some stations have already downloaded some of the songs.

Two stations have interviewed Phil about the background to his album. This caused immediate listener interest with some phoning in to say how they had been moved by the stories as well as music and lyrics.

Phil said: “One listener told me she had been in tears as she listened to all four songs played on one program and had been glued to the radio from the moment the first song began. When I asked why, she said each song had touched similar aspects of her own life experiences.”

New Album to be released early November!

It’s a cliché to describe an album release as “long awaited”, but in this case, never has that description been more appropriate.

The news is that Phil Murray’s debut album, aptly titled Never Too Late, is now in the final stages of production and only about 1 month away from official release.

Producer-Arranger Peter Stevenson of Turn Around Music has put the final touches to Phil’s delicately crafted songs, with lush strings provided by a 21-piece orchestral string section being added to the bed already laid down. The album was mixed in Nashville USA and Phil has been assured that it is ready to be mastered and sent to the CD production house.

Although this is Phil’s first commercial album, nothing has been left to chance. News of the album’s actual release date will be announced via this web site, so stay tuned or better still, sign up for updates via the Home Page now. You’ll be able to buy Phil’s CD direct via the web site and digitally via i-Tunes and other e-tail stores.

Long awaited it may be – but the quality of Phil Murray’s first album will prove that it’s Never Too Late!
